Heterotopia is a key term in Michel Foucault’s cultural critique. Another place or space, which is different from the usual space and challenges its very existence. The heterotopic space is simultaneously real and mythical, physical and imagined. On the one hand, it creates an affinity to the real space that surrounds it; On the other hand, it transforms its properties and subverts its topographical, symbolic or linguistic codes. The heterotopic space indicates the exception and deviation in relation to the real space and the devices with which it corresponds. Abnormality takes a spatial form and represents human desire and fantasy.
